Film to Video Process

A&R has a complete film-to-video and video post-production system. Although we specialize in railroad related subjects, we can help with any video project.

We use professional film transfer houses where the film is cleaned and restored and splices chemically bonded so as not to damage the emulsion. Transfer is made to time-coded Betacam SP videotape, using the wet-gate scratch-suppression process. Our contractor uses a sophisticated telecine converter capable of compensating for sprocket slot wear, shrinkage and speed variations. The video processing is corrected on a scene-by-scene basis for color shift or fading to capture the maximum available detail. In most cases, we hand carry the film and supervise the transfer. The film is returned to the owner in better condition than when received.

Post-production is accomplished entirely in our studio. We edit in the 3/4" U-Matic SP format. We log the scenes and prepare an edit decision list, with the film owner's assistance, to obtain a credible story line. An edit master is then created wherein the scenes are rearranged in the desired order. Note that, depending on the subject and quantity of material provided, films from other sources may be used in the same video.

We prepare a script for the narration. Music is selected from our licensed library or composed in our MIDI studio. We can create up to 50 tracks of audio and sound effects, which include the music, narration, bells, horns, motor whine, steam loco exhausts, wheels on rail, birds or anything else appropriate to enhance the impact of the film. This is all computer synchronized to the video and recorded onto the audio tracks. The job is finished when computer titles, graphics and maps are added.

If A&R is to retain the copyright for the program, this process is entirely at our expense. Compensation is negotiated with the film owner. We can also negotiate terms if the program rights are to be retained by the owner.

A&R also offers quality volume VHS duplication services. Masters in any format are transferred to 3/4" SP tape from which the duplicates would be made. We can provide just the recorded cassettes or we can provide them with labels, sleeves or full plastic cases, with or without jackets. We can provide a custom jacket design as well. Additionally, we could provide drop shipping to your customers from your order list. The specific costs for any of these services would depend on the length of the master and quantities involved.
